Evidence-based Management of Multiple Sclerosis
This multidisciplinary course focuses on the current and emerging principles and developments in the management and care of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It presents common problems, best evidence and practice, as well as the latest research, to enable clinicians to address these problems more efficiently.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of this course is to enable clinicians to address common problems associated with MS using evidence based practice, as well as gain knowledge about current and emerging developments in MS management and care.
Intended Learning Outcome
- Define MS and discuss clinical features of the disease.
- Review normal immunology and neurophysiology.
- Review the pathophysiology, aetiology and differential diagnosis of MS.
- Understand different types of MS and the rehab focus of each stage.
- Discuss pharmacological management of MS.
- Review physical examination, outcome measures, goal setting and interventions related to MS.
- Discuss causes of balance and gait disturbances in MS, and improvement strategies.
- Discuss management of common MS symptoms, including fatigue, spasticity and pain.
- Review the evidence base and recent randomised controlled trials (RCTs), and debate several clinical case studies.
Target Audience
Qualified clinicians of any level, band or experience eg physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses and exercise instructors.
Pre-requisites
No specific pre-requisites required. Pre-course material will be provided to aid learning and maximise the benefit of the course. Clinicians must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Some experience of working with people with MS will be an advantage.
